Conference 02 March 2017

Presentation & Report 05 March 2017

Dear Colleagues,

There is an exponential rise in the numbers of papers published recently on the Gut Microbiome and its association with disease process. Equally there is a rising interest in the use of probiotics in the treatment of diseases associated with the Microbiome. This is in an uncharted area that needs careful considerations, as the over use or uncontrolled use of the so called "safe herbal alternate medicine" may ultimately bring more harm than good.
We do recognize that there is a big role for Probiotics in the treatment of certain diseases especially in those disorders caused directly by a change in the local microbiome. However, the different and varied forms of probiotics available to us today, need careful consideration and proper regulation.
The South East Asia Probiotics consensus was set up to recruit KOL from around the region, so that a consensus of opinions can be reached in matter pertaining to the use of Probiotics in disease entities in this region. Each region has their specific " local microbiome" and this specificity and its interaction with the host, plays a major role in disesase pathogenesis.
Whether a "specific probiotic" can be effective region-wide remains to be seen. This may explain the variable responses seen with different probiotics and also brinq into question whether single strains or multiple strains are more effective.
We hope that the South East Asia Probiotics consensus will help us answer some of these questions.

Dato Dr Andrew Chua
